Lennox stood in front of the wedding arch, which was completely adorned with a mix of tropical flowers and white roses, and stared out at the rippling blue waves of the Caribbean Sea. He shoved his hands in the pockets of his cream linen pants, wondering how he’d ended up here.

Of course, he knew the events that had led to him standing at the altar, waiting to make a legal and binding commitment to a woman he barely knew. But what he didn’t know was how he’d come to the point where this wedding was anything more than a formality.

He’d like to say it was just because he was playing a role to benefit his mother and Angel’s parents. But as he stood here, waiting for the ceremony to begin, he realized the flutters in his stomach weren’t caused by dread. No, this was something akin to anticipation, excitement even.

He’d meant it when he’d told Angel this marriage would be real, and they would be together. He would honor the vows he spoke today until their marriage came to the agreed-upon end. He intended to treat Angel with the same respect and care his father had always shown his mother. She was gifting him with a child. In his mind, she deserved no less. But he was beginning to think he actually wanted to marry Angel.

Why, though? It can’t just be about the baby.

He didn’t have time to explore that thought, and honestly, he wasn’t certain he wanted to. The sound of approaching footsteps pulled him from his musings and forced him back into playing his role as expectant groom. Except, strangely, it didn’t feel so much like playing a role at this moment.

“Lennox,” Angel Rodriguez called to him just before reaching the arch. “May I have a moment?”

“Of course, Mr. Rodriguez.”

“Do we really need to be this formal? You’re about to become my son-in-law and the father of my first grandchild.”

“Well, since I refer to your daughter as Angel, I feel like family gatherings might get a little confusing if I call you by your given name.”

Angel Rodriguez’s mouth spread into a wide grin, the same one his daughter wore when she was amused by something. There was warmth there. Considering the situation, Lennox appreciated it.

“Lennox, I won’t beat around the bush. I know the reason you and my daughter are marrying so hastily is to protect your career.”

Lennox was poised to speak when the older man held up his hand to stop him. “I’m not here to argue the point, Lennox. My daughter has never mentioned anything about wanting to settle down. Her only goal has been to run the legal department for Devereaux Inc. But if she’s doing this, she must care a great deal about you. Knowing she doesn’t give her heart easily, if she’s willing to give hers to you, that speaks volumes to your character.”

Lennox stood, staring at the man in awe. He was obviously a proud and protective father, and Angel was lucky to have him.
